Metallica forms when drummer Lars Ulrich reaches out to vocalist James Hetfield about starting a band. The pair initially met in Los Angeles that May after guitarist Hugh Tanner and Hetfield — then in a group called Leather Charm — answered a classified Ulrich posted in a local paper, the Recycler, seeking like-minded metal musicians. It was an inauspicious introduction. “Lars was there with a hodgepodge drum kit that was three different colors and he had two cymbals that were cracked and fallen over,” Hetfield recalls.
